When the Holidays Hurt; Finding Joy in Life's Chaos

The holidays are supposed to be magical, right!? Twinkling lights, cozy family moments, and a warm sense of gratitude that fills the air. But what happens when that magic feels just out of reach?

I’ll be honest with you — I’ve had holidays where I felt like I was on the outside looking in, watching everyone else bask in holiday cheer while I struggled to find even a spark of it. Real life doesn’t stop for the holidays. Bills pile up, loved ones are missed, and sometimes the weight of our own worries makes it hard to feel anything but overwhelmed.

Sound familiar? If it does, I want you to know something: You’re not alone, and it’s okay to feel this way. But I also want you to know that there’s a way through it.

When the Holidays Aren’t So Merry

For me, the hardest part is the guilt. Feeling like I should be happy because I have so much to be thankful for, yet still carrying this heaviness in my heart. There were years I sat at family dinners smiling on the outside while quietly wrestling with stress, grief, or exhaustion.

But here’s what I’ve realized: The holiday blues don’t make you ungrateful. They don’t mean you’re weak. They mean you’re human.

Life doesn’t take a holiday break, and the weight of it can feel heavier when everyone else seems so effortlessly joyful. But even in those moments of struggle, there’s an opportunity to find something deeper.

Reclaiming the Magic

One year, when I felt particularly low, I did something different. I stopped pretending I was okay and instead started asking myself: What if today was the last time I had this moment? What would I regret missing?

It was a game changer. Instead of focusing on what I didn’t have or what wasn’t perfect, I began to see the beauty in small things — the laughter of my loved ones, the flicker of candles, or even just the warmth of knowing I wasn’t alone.

Imagining my world without these simple, everyday blessings gave me a renewed sense of gratitude. And gratitude? It has a way of pulling you out of the darkest places, reminding you of what truly matters.

Giving Your Way Back to Joy

I also learned that the quickest way to shift my mindset was to focus on others. It might sound cliché, but giving really does fill the heart. Whether it’s volunteering, donating, or simply offering a kind word, the act of giving brings purpose — and purpose fuels joy.

It’s like this: When we give, we remind ourselves that we still have something to offer, no matter how heavy life feels. And in return, we feel a deeper connection to the world around us.

Letting Go of the Pressure

Here’s the truth: The holidays don’t have to be perfect. Your house doesn’t need to look like a Hallmark card, and you don’t need to feel a constant stream of joy to make the season meaningful.

What matters is being present. Feeling what you feel without judgment. Finding those fleeting moments of connection and letting them fill your heart.

Even on the hardest days, there’s something to hold onto. It might be the warmth of a friend’s hug, the quiet peace of a cup of coffee in the morning, or the sound of laughter in the next room.

A Holiday Reminder

If you’re battling the holiday blues, I want you to remember this: You’re stronger than you feel right now. The sadness doesn’t define you, and it won’t last forever. Life might be heavy, but there’s light to be found — even in the darkest corners.

Take a moment to imagine your life without the blessings you already have. Let that thought inspire you to cherish the moments you’ve been given, even if they’re not perfect.

This holiday season, give yourself permission to feel, to reflect, and to grow. The joy you’re looking for might just be hiding in the gratitude you’ve yet to discover.

Hold on to hope, embrace your loved ones, and remember: You have the power to create your own holiday magic — one small moment at a time.

Much love,

Me:)
